Title of Octavian (Gaius Julius Caesar
Octavianus), first of the Roman emperors.
He joined forces with Mark Antony and Lepidus
in the Second Triumvirate. Following Mark
Antony's liaison with the Egyptian Queeen
Cleopatra, Augustus defeated her troops at
Actium 31 BC. As emperor (from 27 BC) he
reformed the government of the empire, the
army, and Rome's public services, and was a
patron of the arts. The period of his rule is
known as the Augustan Age.
